When it comes time to replace your aging deck, just remember, a great hill country view deserves a fabulous new deck! At Archadeck of Austin, we salute homeowners who want to make the most of their views from the deck. The project featured here is located in the Jester Estates neighborhood of Austin, and these homeowners have awesome views from the back of their home. Our job was to design and build a new custom deck worthy of those views.
Our clients wanted to replace their well-worn wooden deck with a new wood deck – specifically, one made of cedar. Before we could build the new deck, however, we needed to address erosion issues we discovered under the old deck. Because the topography of the area is so hilly, erosion is not unusual here. We advised the homeowners that erosion under the deck would continue unless we addressed it. The solution was to add a good bed of gravel to the site before erecting the deck substructure of pressure-treated pine.

The Beauty of a Cedar Deck is Timeless
With the gravel and substructure in place, we added the new cedar deck surface and fascia. This custom deck design includes a parting board and picture framing around the entire deck perimeter. These extra touches give the deck a more polished look.
The cedar deck looks right at home in this setting, especially with the Sherwin Williams natural stain color the homeowners selected. The black iron railing, 36” tall, features 2” iron posts. The thin, black balusters in this railing seem to disappear into the view rather than obscure it.
From the beautiful cedar decking boards to the practically-invisible railings, our clients are thrilled with their new deck. So often when we create such an amazing transformation with a simple deck replacement, homeowners wonder why they waited so long!
