If you didn’t know better, you would think that this vast and exquisite swim spa deck, cedar pergola and dressing/changing area was located in the outskirts of one of the most exclusive celebrity neighborhoods outside Tinseltown.
But alas, luckily for us, it’s right here, in our own Austin backyard of Round Rock.
Designing and building Round Rock spa decks like this innovatively handsome and multi-functional outdoor sanctuary was a true joy for our design and build team led by Archadeck master craftsman Jim Schallon.
The first time we visited the site, there was just a swim spa deck. So we started the project by building out a new area for access with new stairs, built 18 inches below the top of the swim spa.
Before.
To strengthen and expand the swim spa foundation, we installed new decking and railing on the new deck area, adjacent to the existing deck area. For safety and perimeter reinforcement, we added a railing handcrafted out of cedar with black Deckorators balusters.
Next, for the ultimate in leisure convenience, we decided there was no need to enter the home to get spa-ready. So we designed and built the adjacent changing room and dressing area with discrete privacy in mind. Privacy options for your outdoor living space like this are just part of our creative problem solving process.
The changing room was built by this Round Rock TimberTech deck builder using board-on-board vertical boards that are not too tightly spaced together to decrease the chance of attracting insects, wasps, dirt daubers and other annoying pests that inadvertently create their own outdoor enclaves. To enjoy refreshments when out there, we also added a tray serving area so that food and drinks could be enjoyed in the space.
As we now view it from a distance in the backyard, the architectural splendor of this creation is reminiscent of the design work of master visionary Frank Lloyd Wright.
Born on June 8, 1867, Frank Lloyd Wright is not only one of the world’s greatest architects, but he was also the most prolific, controversial as well as inspiring. Wright was a writer, an art collector and a philosopher, as well as a visionary and these all inspired his approach to his craft of architectural design and functionality.
He conceived the Prairie Style which this view reminds me of. The style was born out of his belief that we needed fewer, larger rooms which flowed more easily.
FORM AND FUNCTION MEETS LIFETIME SUSTAINABILITY
Instead of using pressure-treated lumber for the swim spa deck foundation, we recommended TimberTech low maintenance decking which is a win/win.
A win for the environment as it is comprised of recycled materials that would have normally been deposited in a landfill. And another win as upkeep of this highly durable and beautiful decking material is a breeze. A quick rinse of a garden hose or swish of a broom keeps TimberTech decking as good as new in appearance.
Last but surely not least, a wonder of nature can be found in Round Rock. And it just so happens to surround the back of this property. A natural spring stream is connected to the back of the property, so there is a constant flow of water that is audible from the swim spa deck. And that is total relaxation in any language.
