If you are attacked by annoying insects as you try to enjoy your open porch, you can probably identify with our clients in the Chace Lake Subdivision of Hoover, AL. They had a cozy covered porch at the back of their home … but there was one problem. They had far too many uninvited guests—mosquitoes! The homeowners were ambushed every evening just as the air cooled off and the temperature was perfect for porch sitting. Something had to be done. The humans were not willing to give up their precious porch time.
Screened porch builder Archadeck of Birmingham came to their rescue just in time for summer. By converting their existing covered porch into a screened porch, we restored the usability— or livability! —of this outdoor living space.
— Before Archadeck of Birmingham transformed this covered porch.
We doubled the size of the porch itself, which also increased the functionality of the space. The original covered porch led to a patio that was not covered. The new screened porch encompasses the entire area, from the (former) covered porch out to the end of the old patio. Now the homeowners have room to stretch out and room for two ceiling fans instead of one!
— After; look at all the outdoor living protected space!
In order to support the additional length of roofing, we added substantial posts and framing for this Hoover AL open porch to screened porch conversion. We finished the screened porch exterior with the same siding and trim present on the home’s exterior.
If You Don’t Love Mosquitoes, You’ve Got to Love Screens!
It’s hard to say which is the bigger “star” of this project, the screens themselves or the stunning ceiling we installed in the porch interior. The screens obviously get top billing because without screens, this project would not have been possible. But the ceiling! The work we did on this tongue-and-groove ceiling is exquisite. Not only that, but the lighter ceiling color brightens the porch immensely.
You can certainly imagine just how MUCH more living these homeowners will be able to do on their new screened porch. They’ve already added a TV to the porch, and the bug-free, protected space is now their favorite room of the house.
Having a screened porch has made all the difference for these homeowners. They can look forward to enjoying this screened porch year-round, never giving another thought to the onset of mosquito season in Hoover, Alabama.
