At Archadeck of Birmingham, we take our cues from you, the client. If you’re replacing an older deck, the best new deck design we can create is one that keeps what you liked about the old deck. At the same time, we will create a design that addresses any issues you had with the deck you are replacing. Today’s feature project, a deck replacement in the Lake Crest neighborhood of Hoover, AL, is a good example.
Deck Design Decisions: Remove the Stump or Work Around it?
An elevated deck overlooking a sloped back yard can be quite inviting! When you’re on the deck, you look out over the world at your feet. It’s like your own slice of heaven at a glance. At ground level, though, things may look different. The original deck at this home was an optimum size for the homeowners but included an odd stair configuration to get around a tree stump. By removing the stump to grade, we were able to simplify the stair design so it no longer required two landings.
The original deck had two big corners. For the new deck layout, we removed the big corner near the stairs and built new stairs with one landing. At the other end, we installed a bay corner to soften the angles there. The homeowners liked the size of their deck so we didn’t need to change that. We simply reconfigured the design to make it tighter.
Deck Design Options: The Appeal of Low-maintenance Decking is Strong
Our Lake Crest clients were ready to trade in their wood deck for one built with low-maintenance composite decking. Their specific selection was TimberTech Pro Reserve decking in the Dark Roast color. They will want to keep the deck swept free of leaves, and hose it down occasionally, but sanding, staining and sealing are in the past. TimberTech Pro decking materials have a 30-year fade and stain warranty.
The new deck railing features black powder-coated aluminum balusters and pressure-treated rails with a TimberTech Pro Dark Roast rail cap. It’s an excellent combination. The thin black balusters increase visibility, improving the homeowners’ view of their surroundings. The composite rail cap promises a surface smooth to the touch, and it will remain splinter-free over the years.
