I clearly remember the first time I visited this Hoover home in the Lake Crest subdivision.
I went to the bottom of the sloping grade in their backyard and looked up at the original structure which we would soon replace.
All I could think of as I gazed up at the existing space was The Mother Goose rhyme:
“There was a crooked man, and he walked a crooked mile,
He found a crooked sixpence against a crooked stile;
He bought a crooked cat which caught a crooked mouse,
And they all lived together in a little crooked house.”

Upon a closer look at the aged structure that was about to be reimagined and transformed, you could clearly see how weather-beaten and time-forgotten the wood deck had become.
The strength and structural integrity of the old deck had become tremendously compromised over the years and needed to be replaced.

Our first thought was to redesign the flow of the stairs. The original deck blueprint had a roller coaster effect of just jutting downward. Those 27 stairs went straight down to the backyard lawn without any rhyme or reason – as if it were a quick escape route.
In reimagining it for greater safety and a much more heightened aesthetic, we decided to recreate the staircase in two descents – the primary one from the new deck downward with a brief respite on a smaller deck foundation which turned at a sharp 90 degree angle to continue down to the backyard slope.
Our thought was to take a brief pause – for just a moment – to capture the beauty of the backyard as you approached it – something the previous staircase did not afford.

The new design is simply majestic, with its strong architectural bones. In enlarging the deck footprint from the original, outdoor living space was increased to allow greater usability. To attribute to its permanence, the old weather wood in both the deck and the screened porch was replaced with new pressure treated lumber.
