A short drive from downtown Birmingham, AL, Mountain Brook is blessed with a tranquil setting surrounded by natural beauty. Lavish greenery and majestic trees dot the Mountain Brook landscape, many of which can be enjoyed on the properties owned by our clients.
This story is about one such Mountain Brook family who enjoyed an outdoor living space but felt it was time to take it to the next level to preserve the best of what they already had and to add embellishments for a more functional and comfortable future.
Adding A Screened Area To A Gable Roof Covered Backyard Porch Started The Transformation
Breathtakingly beautiful both inside and out, this outdoor living space transformational upgrade is a tale worth sharing.
Under the direction and tutelage of Mountain Book local Archadeck owners and master design consultants, Derek Crews and Carissa Crews, our professional Archadeck Outdoor Living team screened in the existing patio to fashion a custom screened room and tied the new gable roof of the new porch into the gable peaks of the existing sunroom roof – giving the illusion that it always was exactly like that.
A False Wall Was Constructed As An Adjunct To The Gable Roof Installation
To create a functional partitioned area inside the new screened room, a false wall was built to segment space for a variety of future uses and applications. A respite for a quiet moment alone. An area for a private conversation. Or an area for the kids to play while the adults talked about events of the day and what tomorrow will bring.
Often referred to as a stud wall or partition, a false wall is a non-load bearing wall that acts as a divider of a larger space. They’re all about creating new spaces, adding quaint charm and intentionally providing more privacy.
A Glance Up Once Inside Of The New Mountain Brook Screened Porch Is A Visual Treat
Accentuating the pyramid shape of the gale roof interior, our design team chose to install a pickled spruce ceiling, shiplap style.
This natural wood ceiling created a light and airy feeling that complements virtually any décor.
The process of pickling the spruce is achieved by diluting white paint or stain until the desired effect is accomplished. The resulting whitewashed look brightens up any space as it easily reflects light, adding just the right touch of coastal charm.
The Durability Of Cedar Was Added To The Project For The Posts And Dividers
Frequently used in our custom outdoor project designs, cedar is a wonderful natural wood choice.
Cedar, naturally fragrant on its own, is by its nature resistant to rot, decay and insect infestations, making it perfect for outdoor spaces. Whatever Mother Nature can throw at it, cedar is king due to its natural oils that give it its strength, durability and captivating aroma.
In addition, its warm, rich color proves to be an excellent aesthetic accent to this Mountain Brook exterior structure.

After the construction was completed, the homeowners decided to paint the cedar black to augment the color palette of their home’s exterior.
A custom outswing door and a second slider provide easy entry into the screened porch from the backyard landscape.
Gable Roof, Shed Roof Or A Pergola, With Archadeck You Can Have It Made In The Shade
Depending on your individual style and taste preference, having Archadeck protect your new outdoor project by building a cover overhead is smart – very smart.
How so? Here’s how:
- A roof or pergola adds vertical interest by contrasting the horizontal lines of a deck, porch or patio.
- It can serve as a shade structure, depending on how it is designed.
- It can help anchor – or frame – a deck, patio, or outdoor kitchen/grill area.
- It adds privacy and intimacy to any open-air surface.
- Last but not least, it can serve as a sturdy structure from which to hang a swing – or even a bed swing.
