I live in a hilly neighborhood that I walk with my dog all the time. Whenever I walk, I always look around at the houses and wave to neighbors. Recently I started noticing that the change in elevation truly impacts the amount of privacy that me and my neighbors have in our backyards.
When my husband and I bought our house there was already a small deck off of our kitchen. While most of it is open to our yard, there is a privacy screen of lattice on one side. If it wasn’t there, everyone walking on the street (we live on a corner) would be able to look right onto our deck as the top of our six foot fence is below our deck height on that part of the yard (the yard slopes). Although our privacy screen isn’t completely solid, it gives me enough privacy so I don’t feel like I’m on display for the rest of the neighborhood.
Privacy is a keep component to an outdoor living design. While some homeowners enjoy an open design where they can easily see and interact with neighbors, others want a more room-like feel complete with privacy walls incorporated.
