Why Matthews is often referred to as Stumptown

Located between Charlotte and Monroe, the area now known as Matthews once boasted rolling woodlands with large stands of trees. In the early 1800s, the lush, inviting land attracted early settlers, mainly farmers. Along with the beautiful land, another draw to the area was the close proximity to trading trails, game-rich hunting grounds and the ancestral homes of the Waxhaw and Catawba Indians.

Farmers began clearing the land for planting around the start of the 19th century. Cotton grew well and soon became the primary cash crop. When the land was cleared, the abundance of tree stumps left standing gave the area its original name; it was unofficially known as Stumptown.

The same beautiful rolling woodlands and abundance of mature trees are present in Matthews today. Matthews’s population has grown to over 30,000. The area is overflowing with family-friendly neighborhoods and an appealing historic district — perfect for enjoying all the perks of outdoor living!
