As if it was always there, this screened porch not only complements this Long Grove IL home, but you would never guess it was added on to the home many years after it was built. What is even more interesting is the fact that the porch builder was able to match the porch siding to the home siding. The soffit matches, the trim color matches, and even the gutters match. It can’t be seen in this picture but the roof tiles also… You guessed it. They look like they were always there.
After building outdoor room additions here in the Chicagoland area for over 25 years, we can tell you the top requests homeowners have for their new porch or sunroom. Homeowners want their new room to fill with the sun. They want a cheery, light, bright, and airy space to relax and enjoy the sights and sounds of the outdoors. Tied for most highly requested features of a porch or outdoor room additions is to make the room look like it was always there. Gone are the porches of yesteryear that looked like a sore thumb and were obvious late additions to the home.
Here is how we go about making your new space look original to your home.
Complimentary Roof Shape
One of the first decisions in the design process is the roof shape. There are a number of factors. The first thing we do is look at the roof shape or shapes on the home. The home may have one or more gables, may have elevations with hip roofs and homes may have a combination of rooflines. In order to make your new space look original to your home, we want to match or complement the existing roof shape. This home has a gable roof on the main home and also a gable over the garage section. A gable style roof was a great choice for this roof.
Trim matters
Your home’s trim color is one of the defining characteristics of its facade outside of the siding style. Your trim is used to outline the architectural features of your homes such as windows, doors, and soffits. Your new porch, in order to fit in, should have the same trim color as your home.
Face value
Whether your facade is stone, vinyl, wood, or stucco, your facade is literally the face of your home. If your new room has exterior siding such as this knee wall, it is critical that the new siding compliments or matches the home’s siding.
