The project we’re featuring here is one such example. These homeowners in Westerville, OH, had an aging wooden deck that needed to be replaced. They were happy with a wood deck and not looking for anything more expensive or flashy. They didn’t need special amenities or “bells and whistles,” as the expression goes.

These clients did want one big change in their new wood deck design; they wanted a bigger deck this time around. As you can see, the new deck has a bigger footprint, extending across more of the back of the house. This deck seems to “fit” the house better than the old one did. Instead of jutting out from the back door, it flows along the back of the home.
While the new deck surface and steps are made of pressure-treated pine, the homeowners chose cedar for their new deck railing. The railing itself is an updated design, nothing fancy, still wood rails and pickets. The new railing features a board, flat side up, along the top, sometimes called a drink rail. That will come in handy as a place people can set their beverages down while they’re standing around talking.
