In May 2019, the Village of Galena became the first municipality in Delaware County to become a Bee City USA affiliate. Our village joined more than a hundred other cities and campuses across the country united in improving their landscapes for pollinators.
The objective of the Bee City USA program is to promote the conservation of pollinators such as the many bee species, butterflies, moths, beetles, hummingbirds, and others that are responsible for the reproduction of almost ninety percent of the world’s flowering plant species. This is done by raising public awareness and getting individuals and communities to sustain pollinators by providing them with productive habitats, rich in a variety of native plants and free of pesticides.
Now here’s the even better news. Those lucky bees get to enjoy and pollinate all day, every day, in this magical backyard paradise – one of the most spectacular we have ever had the pleasure of designing and building.
It’s Hard To Image A Better Place To Enjoy Outdoor Living Than This Multi-Faceted Combination Outdoor Living Space
As we look back on this exceptionally stunning and feature-rich backyard oasis, it’s almost as if the homeowners had a magic lamp and rubbed it perfectly to achieve the dream outdoor space they always envisioned.
It was indeed our pleasure to make that vision come to life.
To appreciate the scope of this outstanding combination outdoor living project and the careful thought that went into it, let’s review exactly what all it entailed.
The Difference Is In The Details, So Here Are All Of Them
- This multi-faceted combination outdoor living space includes two decks – an elevated deck and a landing. To help the family truly enjoy their time outdoors, low maintenance was the order of the day. As such, we used an exceptional, carefree decking product – TimberTech Legacy in the color Pecan. In fact, when we say low maintenance, we’re not overstating the case. TimberTech is so confident about this composite, Earth-friendly decking material that it comes with a 30 year fade and stain warranty. In addition, it features capped composite Mold Guard technology to eliminate the possibility of mold and rot. And most proudly of all, TimberTech decking products are made right here in the USA with recycled materials, so Mother Nature is not disturbed.
All of the posts are wrapped in Paulownia wood due to its incredible stamina and performance. It has a good weight to strength ratio, is very light and absorbs less moisture than many other types of wood.
- The handsome and impressive back aluminum railing that defines and protects the space will proudly stand the test of time within this low maintenance oasis.
- The paver patio has a double border, which features a geometrically stunning sandstone border to accent and tie in with the sandstone elements and another border in the color Mocha. The luxurious patio field is Unilock Beacon Hill pavers in the color Birch. We also tied in Beacon Hill flagstone for even more dramatic visual effect, and practicality.
Inspired by natural cut flagstone, the blended colors and distinctive texture of Beacon Hill Flagstone have a relaxed look and feel, with all the benefits of Enduracolor technology. As the name implies, it is manufactured to hold its beautiful color for years. The subtle surface texture is comfortable to walk on in bare feet, and appears even more dramatic in the light of sunrise and sunset. - A magnificently majestic outdoor fireplace was custom crafted for this project, with a three-tiered fire feature and adjacent seating wall of Torino flat weathered ledge stone. Defined by long, linear pieces of varying heights and a distressed, aged surface, each stone is shaped to ensure tight dry stack installation and gives moderate shadow relief, even after being grouted. As for the glowing flames it emits, this outdoor fireplace is wood burning and has wood storage on either side and seating walls, which makes frequency of use a breeze.
Notice the couch/seating wall that is built on one side like a sofa with a back, and on the other side it is designed at bar height for a multiple of functional uses. - The under porch dry space features Quality Edge Inside Out® under decking. To increase the functionality of this backyard project for outdoor dining, working, relaxation, and personal rejuvenation, Inside Out is a tremendous asset. Inside Out underdeck moves water away from the deck and living spaces, allowing homeowners to spend more time in their usable outdoor space while also protecting what’s underneath. Looking up at the underside of a deck, instead of being greeted with bugs, exposed beams and cobwebs, Inside Out underdeck boasts a natural wood-look or smooth solid color providing a refined design, and finishing the look of any outdoor space while serving an important function. Brilliant!
- The architecturally enhanced spiral staircase allows an easy transition while outdoors from the primary upper deck to the rain deck below. For design continuity, we added TimberTech stair treads that match the decking used on the landing and deck.
- Notice the stunning sidewalk from the patio to the driveway for ease of use to the new space. We were able to use the homeowner's existing sandstone steps and repurpose them to help eliminate and compensate for these elevation changes. The pillars, including the fireplace and connecting the seating wall, are all topped with Indiana Limestone with a square edge.
- We especially love the ingenious elevation changes in the transition to the new patio. At every point and turn, the eye is rewarded with incredible views of outdoor living excellence and impeccable attention to detail.
- As for powering up the space, we did tons of electrical on this project including ceiling fans, outlets, sconces, and more.
10. Finishing up the space, Archadeck of Columbus also designed and installed the softscape surround that flanks the new areas.
