How long will it take to build my new outdoor living space?

According to Archadeck of Kansas City owner, Dan Hall, this is one of the most common questions he receives during his complimentary design consultations. In his own experience, it takes Archadeck less time to build than it takes most clients to make their final design and materials decisions after the consultation. If you schedule your complimentary design consultation in November, but do not arrive at your final decisions and sign your contract, your project will be delayed well into 2023. In a perfect planning scenario, where you schedule your consultation this month, and finalize your contract in November, your construction project will begin in March of next year. Time is of the essence because other clients are already on our 2023 building schedule.

Plan now for optimal time on your new screen porch next year

Here is a breakdown of a typical timeline before building begins:

1. Scheduling your initial design consultation – one to two weeks
2. Your decision period – however much time it takes you to decide
3. Apply for blueprints and permits – can be 6 to 8 weeks
4. Survey (if applicable) – can take up to two months

Let’s say you have your design consultation in mid-November. Then, you take two months to finalize your design and sign your contract. That takes you to mid-January. Then, up to another two months for blueprints and permitting can take you to mid-March. If a survey is required, that puts your project starting approximately mid-May. Depending on the project type you are having built, the build time could be another month or two, which has your first opportunity to enjoy your new space in mid-summer. The quicker you act, the better!
