Over the years we’ve developed affinities for many varieties of outdoor living spaces, and one of our favorites is the combination space. While some properties are limited by the amount of space in the backyard, others have room to create expansive outdoor areas that combine many outdoor home additions into a cohesive whole. In this customer’s case, a patio, deck, and porch flow together to create a stunning space that enhances the function and feel of their previously limited outdoor living space. We began with a covered, screened-in porch area built with a gable roof, pressure-treated frame, tastefully exposed wood roof beams, and a gorgeous slate floor. And, while we didn’t provide the fireplace, this client wanted a hanging fireplace to help them savor chilly evenings year-round: We were happy to oblige, we think it added wonderful ambiance to the space!
For the deck, landing, and stair area, we needed to develop a space that was durable, beautiful, and functioned well positioned in a limited area between the patio and porch. We love working with composite and synthetic decking materials as they closely mimic natural wood while having lifetimes far longer in a variety of colors which is why we installed DuraLife Brazilian Cherry on this build. Using carefully crafted custom mahogany railings to make the deck feel like a standalone space and provide handholds in the stair area. Plus, low-voltage riser lighting provides stunning illumination guiding feet up and down the stairs to ensure family and guests can easily go between the deck and patio, no matter the time of day or night.

Finally, we built an oblong patio space using Lafitt Grana, smooth surface Pavers in Silex that gently extends from the base of the porch and stairs to provide an area that flows well and has enough space for furnishings and great walkability. To the left of the home, we extended the patio space to meet the existing pathway so it can be accessed from every side of the property. While patios are extremely durable, some amount of foundation work could be necessary to ensure the patio can resist warping over time. With this in mind, we also created an underground drainage system to pull moisture away from the patio’s foundation and extend its lifetime.
