As winter turns to spring, and spring turns into summer our thoughts turn to comfortable outdoor living arrangements. A place where you can cool off from the Texas heat. If you are lucky enough to have a backyard pool, as these Irving homeowners do, then having that “perfect” poolside outdoor living space is all the more important!
Archadeck of Northeast Dallas-Southlake gave this Irving backyard a full update.
When these Irving, TX homeowners reached out to Archadeck of Northeast Dallas-Southlake they were looking to upgrade their poolside outdoor living space. The existing area consisted of a wooden deck that was in need of a replacement or upgrade, and a pool surround that needed an update.
The homeowners were poised to begin the new space, so Archadeck got to work perfecting their new design.
The new backyard consists of a new stain and stamp patio, re-plastering the pool, new coping and new pool surround as well as a new cedar pergola. Each element of the project worked together like a puzzle. The final outcome resulting in three additions that flow together as one comfortable poolside outdoor living room.
Before Archadeck of NE Dallas-Southlake began the project.
First, we removed the existing coping and tile around the pool and the wooden deck to make way for the improvements. Archadeck of Northeast Dallas-Southlake then replastered the pool and added new coping around the pool and spa. We used a stain and stamp overlay using a flagstone stamp in walnut, pecan tan and terra cotta.

We then installed a new stain and stamp patio in the area where the deck once stood. The new patio was constructed using a wood stamp pattern with a dark walnut release and dark walnut border. The two stain and stamp patterns and colors blend beautifully together in the design.

To add shade and vertical interest and to increase that “outdoor living room” feel, Archadeck also added a custom cedar pergola. The pergola features a cedar shingled roof. The underside is a tongue and groove finish with exposed cedar beams . We used exposed beams and posts and stained the pergola in a dark solid stain to match the clients’ existing fence.

Unlike many of the pergola additions we complete here at Archadeck, this pergola was not attached using a sidewall connection to the home. In order to achieve the height needed to make the pergola retain a light and airy feel, we installed it using a Sky Lift Roof Riser system. This method allowed us to eliminate the need for additional posts on the side of the home. Needing to only use 2 posts instead of the 4 that are normally required. We used 8 x 8 posts with bracing for the design, which also provides a much “beefier” feel to overall aesthetics of the pergola.
The new pergola is loaded with custom touches.
Archadeck of Northeast Dallas-Southlake also installed a custom TV box within the pergola along with a ceiling fan. The homeowners used festival string lighting (party lights), in the space.
Two curvilinear steps lead into the home from the patio.
For the finished touches, we also added gutters to the pergola to thwart any rain away from the structure and home. The gutters blend in seamlessly with the colors used on the pergola. In addition, the entry from the patio to the home featured double stairs in an appealing curvilinear design. We used the same overlay process and integrated a border that matches the pool surround into the stairs as well.
