Follow us on the journey from an exposed patio with a tiny covered area for shade to a luxurious covered patio with outdoor kitchen and more. Add the poolside setting, bar seating and a big TV, and this Plano, TX, covered patio becomes everyone’s favorite place, day and night.
At Archadeck of NE Dallas-Southlake, we design and build more than a few covered porches and outdoor kitchens every year. This particular covered porch and outdoor kitchen combination in Plano TX has to be one of our favorites – at least in the top 5!
Archadeck Brings Your Backyard Vision to Life
These homeowners had a typical brushed concrete pool surround with a small patio right outside the back door of their home. While a small portion of the patio was covered, there was never enough shade. The homeowners reached out to Archadeck of NE Dallas-Southlake to design and build a space that would add shade, versatility and fun to their poolside area.
Backyard before Archadeck of NE Dallas-Southlake began the project.
This project had an unusual component, too. All of our outdoor living projects are custom-designed, of course, but this one required an extra level of customization. The home’s brick wall facing the pool included two tall, narrow windows. The clients wanted a different wall and a different window looking out onto the patio and pool area – completely different. We can do that!
Archadeck of NE Dallas-Southlake built a custom gable porch roof over the open space, creating a luxurious covered patio. Along with the gable roof, the porch structure includes a massive king truss beam with struts. King post truss is the name given to the “crow’s feet” decorative supports under the gable roof end. The king truss beam is the long beam running end-to-end across the width of the patio roof. An integral part of the porch cover’s support structure, this beam helps support the weight and span of the porch roof. Because of the king truss beam’s immense size, we rented a lift in order to get the beam into position.
The king post truss and beam are created from cedar stained in a dark chocolate hue. The interior of the porch is finished with a tongue-and-groove ceiling and exposed cedar beams. The ceiling is stained in a contrasting dark walnut shade, as are the cedar posts.
Unique Custom Brick Wall with Horizontal Window
The homeowners wanted us to redesign the brick wall with vertical windows facing the pool area. Archadeck of NE Dallas-Southlake demolished the wall and windows. In its place we installed a new brick wall featuring a decorative brick pattern in the middle. We also installed a horizonal window in the brick wall, above the design. This window will allow some natural light into the interior room that backs up to the covered patio.
We also replaced the Hardie board siding on the house wall under the patio cover. We did not add or take away any of the patio surface area. The brushed concrete patio you see here was part of the original open patio design.
Texas-size Outdoor Kitchen and Amenities Complete the Scene
Giving the covered porch an entire new facet of functionality, we installed a 15-foot L-shaped outdoor kitchen to the space. The outdoor kitchen features a base made from Granbury chopped stone with a smooth Lueders stone countertop. There are so many ways to outfit an outdoor kitchen these days … be sure to notice the silver box built into the end of the counter. It is actually a paper towel holder. Homeowners have a diverse array of options to add to an outdoor kitchen.
The clients added a nifty oscillating fan on the back wall of the outdoor kitchen area to help diffuse smoke and grilling odors. In addition, the covered space has two ceiling fans, guaranteeing a breeze any day of the year. Recessed can lighting in the ceiling will create a soothing ambiance at night.
