For many generations before us, when southern homes didn’t have air conditioning, screen porches were made for sleeping in the hot summer months. When sleeping porches became redundant, the function of the space morphed into hosting visitors or simply relaxing outdoors without the fuss of bugs. There is a certain nostalgia attached to screen porches, which cannot be beat.
The popularity of screen porch windows has grown exponentially over the last decade or so. Many of the screened porches that we design and build include convertible glazed vinyl windows. These windows offer more use of a screened outdoor space. On cool days, the screen porch windows can be left closed to capture sunlight to warm the space, making it usable out of season in the Piedmont Triad.
What Are Screened Porches with Windows Called?
Phraseology varies depending on where you ask this question. In the Piedmont Triad area, screened porches with windows are typically called 3-season rooms. Some might also refer to this type of space as a sunroom, sun porch, or solarium. The reason these spaces are called three-season rooms is because they are usable for all or part of three seasons. However, if you live in a mild climate, like we have in the Greensboro and Winston Salem areas, these rooms really can be used for all or part of every season. We have unseasonably warm days in late fall, winter, and early spring, during which our clients can enjoy their multi-season room. That said, these outdoor rooms could technically be called 4-season rooms.
