At Archadeck of Raleigh-Durham, we are pleased to share the 30th project of our 30th year: a beautiful combination project that transformed a Cary family’s backyard into the ultimate outdoor entertaining space. Featuring a three-season room, TimberTech deck, and a Belgard paver patio with retaining wall and fire pit, this project is representative of the variety of custom outdoor living solutions we offer to help Triangle homeowners realize their outdoor living dreams.
These Cary homeowners came to us with some exciting plans and a design challenge. They were looking forward to enjoying not one but two family weddings in the coming year. They decided their existing low-to-grade deck wasn’t up to par for hosting a large number of family and friends from out of town, so they decided NOW was an ideal time to renovate their backyard living space.
The homeowners asked if we could reimagine their existing space with enough square footage to entertain large groups of people. One of the design challenges we faced was a challenging hillside landscape. With our customized design solution, we were able to increase the outdoor living footprint in their backyard. A new open-air composite deck, three-season porch, and large paver patio expanded the flat area available for use on the previously dysfunctional slope. The resulting project and its cohesive design give the family a stunning and functional backyard space with multiple areas for entertaining.
Create a Flat Backyard
When a hillside property slopes upward, away from a house, building a patio extending off a deck or porch is an excellent way to expand the usable space for outdoor living. This large patio features Belgard Dublin Cobble® 3-Piece pavers in Ardennes complemented by a retaining wall with Belgard Castle Manor Grana™ pavers in Colonial. The rustic yet refined wall highlights the rounded, flowing border of the patio and also helps prevent hillside erosion. With a matching wood-burning fire pit and built-in bench, this patio is an exceptional space to enjoy a variety of daily activities and special occasions.
BONUS: Retaining walls provide additional seating when hosting large gatherings.
Include Shelter
When building a multi-purpose backyard space for a family who entertains, it is useful to include a sheltered area for inclement or hot weather. This three-season room is a great solution for providing cover and extending the amount of time the space is functional throughout the year. By closing the vinyl porch windows, the three-season room allows for greater use in less optimal weather, such as rain, heat, cold, or in allergy season. When the weather is ideal, opening the windows maximizes airflow throughout the room and gives the space a more traditional screened-in porch feeling.
For this Cary three-season porch design, we chose an open gable roofline with a vaulted ceiling to increase natural light in the space. For nighttime use, we installed recessed lighting as well as tray lighting for an indirect ambient glow. The porch windows are Eze-Breeze in Architectural Bronze to complement the Mocha TimberTech flooring. The resulting room performs double duty as a blending of indoor and outdoor space.
Add Composite Decking
The low-to-grade composite deck between the three-season room and the patio provides a gradual transition from the cozy comforts of the porch to outdoor fun on the patio. Only a single step higher than the patio, the TimberTech deck in Tigerwood is ideal for cooking, dining, and watching events unfold in the yard. The composite decking is low maintenance, ensuring the family can enjoy the look and feel of the deck for many years to come without having to regularly clean, stain, or seal the structure.
Better Building By Design
Just as we may celebrate a champagne birthday (a 30th birthday on the 30th day of the month), we raise a toast to our champagne project. The 30th project in our 30th year was a wonderful way to showcase the range of fully customized, high-quality design and build work that we do. It marks a milestone in our journey to serve Raleigh-Durham, and the Greater Triangle by creating beautiful, long-lasting outdoor living spaces that support years of local memory-making with family and friends.
As Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “A house is made with walls and beams, a home is made with hopes and dreams.” Thank you for letting us help make your house a home by crafting outdoor living spaces that are truly unique to your family’s hopes and dreams.
