Durham Home Showcases a Modern Wrap-Around Deck

Creating a joyful outdoor living space doesn’t require complicated design. These Durham homeowners wanted an outdoor living space that opens up to the yard for easy access and enjoyment. They also wanted as few railings as possible and minimal ornamental details to give the space a sleek and modern look. To achieve these goals, their Archadeck of Raleigh-Durham team designed and built a customized wrap-around deck with cascading stairs and a screened-in porch.

The Durham homeowners had a particularly unique design opportunity. Their home’s “backyard” is actually located on the side of their house. The new wrap-around deck ties the side and front of the house together in one seamless design. Although the wrap-around design is reminiscent of a classic southern design, this modern version offers a surprising twist as you follow the deck around the side of the home to discover a large backyard deck and screened-in porch.

To meet the family’s requirement for a minimalist design, we customized the deck and porch with the following elements:

• wide stairs around the entire wrap-around deck
• railings only at the corners
• horizontal wood porch skirting
• PCA® French screen doors on the porch
• an open gable porch roof
• two skylights
• a beadboard porch ceiling
• SCREENEZE® panels for the porch
• black Deckorators® rails in both the screened porch and deck

So we took advantage of that and left the whole thing open and created stairs all the way around. Now the homeowners can access the deck and house from anywhere in the yard in seconds.
