A home’s entrance and front porch provide the first impression when people pass by or arrive for a visit. Front porches are a classic feature of Southern homes, beloved as a gathering place for neighbors and friends in all kinds of weather. So, we were happy to help a Raleigh homeowner who wanted to extend their home’s front porch to allow enough space for sitting and entertaining. To meet their goals, we extended their existing porch across the front of their house, adding a sizeable open gable porch roof over an entertaining area. This project met the homeowner’s functional goals and transformed the home’s entire front façade.
Extending the Front Porch for Instant Charm
Beautiful front porches aren’t limited to traditional architecture. With a little creative design, we extended the front porch of this more contemporary Raleigh
home to offer more space and added charm. First, we extended the porch roof across the entire front of the house. Then we lengthened a section of the porch to accommodate an outdoor dining table. We chose an open gable roof design for the seating section of the porch to allow as much light into the dining area as possible.
To further brighten the space, we finished the new porch ceiling and replaced the existing with white beadboard. We also re-decked the existing deck boards with wide 7.25” AZEK Vintage composite deck boards in Weathered Teak. We then carried the new decking throughout the porch extension to create a cohesive look and provide low-maintenance durability from floor to ceiling.
The open gable porch roof has become the centerpiece of this unique front porch design. The bright-white, masculine, 10x10 inch posts and open king truss immediately draw the eye and enhance the craftsman feel of the home’s architectural design.
This Raleigh deck extension also blends well with the architectural aesthetic of the house and appears part of the original home design. The white posts and trim, tan decking, and modern navy blue siding complement the home’s exterior and give it a fresh new look as well as enhanced functionality.
