Archadeck Transforms Small Chapel Hill Deck into a Backyard Oasis Featuring a Three-Season Porch and Expansive Multi-Level Deck

Many houses are built with what is commonly referred to as a “builder-grade” deck. A builder-grade deck is generally a ten-foot by ten-foot square wooden deck included in the price of building the home. Even though the space provides some outdoor living space, it can lack the amenities and square footage for the changing needs of today’s families.

My Chapel Hill Deck is Too Small

Our client came to us looking for a Chapel Hill deck builder to replace their builder-grade deck with a combination project. They wanted a new outdoor living space with a porch to provide greater protection from the elements and a larger deck for entertaining. Also, given the size of their big backyard, their existing deck was disproportionately small for their property and home. A new, expanded space would better suit their needs and improve the look of their home.

To meet their goals, we designed and built an outdoor space featuring a three-season porch and a bi-level deck expanding across the width of their home.

Converting a Deck to a Three-Season Room

Our first step was to enclose the existing deck with a porch roof, walls, and white Weatherlite windows to transform the space into a three-season room. A space this size works perfectly as a cozy room to retreat to and relax in at various times of the year and in a variety of weather conditions.

This three-season room design features a knee wall with wainscoting trim, and tongue and groove spruce, on the exterior wall of the house. We installed Luxury Vinyl Plank Farmwood flooring, the custom WeatherLite window system, and an open gable roof to provide the comforts of indoor living. The blue painted ceiling combined with the gorgeous views of the yard make this space pleasing to the eye in any direction you look.

Expanding the Chapel Hill Deck

One of the family’s goals was more space to be outside. While enclosing the deck gave them a space to enjoy with coverage from the elements, it didn’t expand how much space they had to enjoy outside of it. In order to create more square footage, our team utilized the footprint of their home to extend the deck, reaching from the new porch to the corner of the home’s exterior. This generous amount of space made it possible to add a bi-level deck, in order to create some visual interest and differentiate functional uses of the space. The two separate but adjacent outdoor spaces allow the family to be able to cook in one spot and dine in another, or host adults and children in their own special areas. The options for entertaining are plentiful.

We designed the deck with TimberTech Edge decking in Maritime Gray with Stone Ash trim. The popular gray composite decking looks clean and modern and will not have to be stained, painted, or sealed. We mirrored the fresh white interior of the porch with TimberTech Radiance Rails and Island Cap lights in white. The cap lights make this new Chapel Hill outdoor living space both usable and glowingly beautiful at night.
