Durham Double Re-Deck Project Enhances Croasdaile Farm Property for Maximum Enjoyment of Nature at Its Finest

At Archadeck of Raleigh-Durham, we provide customized outdoor living solutions to meet your personal lifestyle goals. In this special project, located in Durham’s beloved Croasdaile Farm, we restored two decks at one beautiful home. Tucked up against the neighborhood pond, this re-decking upgrade gave our clients two like-new outdoor living spaces with sweeping pond views.

Double the Re-Deck, Double the Outdoor Fun

This Durham home features two separate decks situated atop a hill, overlooking a peaceful pond. When our clients reached out, both of their decks were past their prime and required deck restoration. The decks’ foundations were still solid, however, enabling us to re-deck both structures. Re-decking is a cost-effective form of deck renovation that involves replacing the deck boards while keeping the existing substructure – sometimes with added supports or expanded square footage. As in this case, re-decking often involves replacing the railings, stair treads, and risers as well.

Both the larger and smaller decks were re-decked with brand new Premium Number One Pressure Treated Pine decking, instantly rejuvenating the look of both spaces.

Playing with Form and Function

As part of the re-decking project, we made some additional adaptations to enhance the visual appeal and functionality of the spaces. For the larger deck, which provides a perfect location for entertaining, we added built-in benches in place of railings on two sides. These benches allow for overflow seating and can also be used for serving or decorations. We also custom-designed the corner stairs for easy access to the yard and to provide overflow seating specifically overlooking the pond. The cascading deck stairs feature stair riser lights for nighttime safety and visibility.

Key Railing Choices

In decking, railing choices can change everything. For these decks, the homeowners chose the Spectrum cable rail system in Atlantis. Cable railings are an excellent choice for decks with amazing views. The cables are a muted gray tone and narrow enough to visually disappear when looking beyond them, so that the view itself remains the focus. Cable railings also provide a modern touch to the aesthetics of the space.

These cable railings feature brown stainless-steel posts and Ipe (Brazilian hardwood) decking in dark brown for a rail cap. The trifecta of materials – steel, cable, and Brazilian hardwood – create a magnificent juxtaposition.

Multi-Functional Outdoor Living

While the larger deck may be better for entertaining, the smaller deck is well-suited for private escapes and more intimate moments. The finishes on this deck match the design of the larger deck with Premium Number One Pressure Treated Pine, cable railings, and built-in benches. The two separate spaces provide flexibility for events and everyday functionality, taking full advantage of the natural surroundings with pond views and plenty of wildlife to observe.
