Transforming a builder-grade patio to a spacious deck to accommodate a busy family’s needs for outdoor fun and toy storage.
As the premier deck builder in the Lebanon, Ohio area, Archadeck of West Central and Southwest Ohio set out to build a very specific deck for very specific requirements. Families with children know the importance of a spacious and functional outdoor living space. Kids want to be outdoors, and with outdoor ride-on toys and other large items, families need a safe place for storage. We provided a deck that will accommodate this family’s needs on both accounts.

As you can see, this home had a modest entertaining space that lacked in more than one area. The concrete pad was much too small to accommodate a family’s many needs. The builder-grade concrete pad offered only one cramped area for eating, without areas for other outdoor fun, and absolutely no option for toy storage.
Never fear! Ours and the family’s visions were perfectly in sync, the stars aligned, and we set out to provide them with a premium pressure-treated wood deck with areas for sitting, grilling, eating, and then some. This family will have no problem finding fantastic ways to utilize their deck and pergola for many years to come. There’s enough room for rabblerousing and relaxation! The addition of a hexagonal, half-moon pergola on this spacious wood deck was a no-brainer for this south-facing outdoor living area. Pergolas are fantastic areas to place seating or create an eat-in space, where we can still enjoy outdoor time without being in direct sunlight. Pergolas offer protection, but they lend character and beauty to the space, as well. What a perfect spot to enjoy fresh-grilled foods with the family or appreciate quiet time with a cup of coffee in the morning!
As most parents know, we can accumulate multitudes of toys over the years. When it comes to outdoor time, kids enjoy their motorized ride-ons, trikes, bikes, wagons, and all things too LARGE to store indoors. Our garages can become toy storage catch-all areas by default, but we offered a great solution for this family. We kept the concrete pad under the deck, that used to be the patio, to utilize as a covered storage area for items that shouldn’t be left on the bare ground. Toys may be safely stored out of sight, which will keep the family’s outdoor space looking neat and tidy – if they can get them to remember to put their toys away – and they can use our garage for…well, parking their cars!
