Why go part-way with low-maintenance materials outdoors when you can have it all? As the old hamburger jingle suggested, “Have it your way!” That applies to your outdoor living space as well. It’s your space.
When these Centerville, OH, homeowners decided it was time for their old deck to be re-done, they knew they’d had enough of traditional wood structures needing to be cleaned, stained and sealed periodically. (Either that or the wood ends up looking like it needs to be cleaned, stained and sealed periodically!) They also wanted to enhance their outdoor living space by adding a pergola and a small paver patio with a retaining wall.
A project like this that involves replacing a deck’s surface boards is called redecking. We never know until we remove the surface boards whether the support structure underneath will need to be replaced, too. In this case, the underlying structure was sound and still usable.

The original deck was built with wood, and the homeowners were now ready to take full advantage of newer materials that are designed to look like wood but last longer and don’t require repeated maintenance. As the Dayton and Cincinnati area’s premier deck builder, Archadeck of West Central & Southwest Ohio suggested the clients consider Envision decking. We’ve used Envision products before because they are reliable and offer several lines that vary in price points and color options.
With a redecking project, you have the perfect opportunity to update — and upgrade — your deck railings. For their new look, these homeowners selected an attractive vinyl hand railing from Mt. Hope Fence.
In addition to the redecking and new railings, the homeowners wanted to have a landing built out from the deck leading to two sets of steps. One set leads to the side yard and the other leads to the walkout basement. The landing and steps were also built with Envision decking materials to match the main level of the deck. The deck also includes low voltage Kichler outdoor lighting for ambiance and safety in the evening.
In keeping with their new low-maintenance theme, the clients selected a low-maintenance vinyl pergola from Mt. Hope Fence. The pergola will provide some shade and also serves as a visual element that helps define the space.
Finally, we installed a small paver patio to extend the space they would have to relax and enjoy the outdoors. The homeowners selected Oberfields pavers for their hardscape design.
If your older deck needs redecking, or if you want to expand your outdoor living space for maximum enjoyment, Archadeck of West Central & Southwest Ohio can help. We will design the combination of outdoor living structures that serves your family’s specific needs.
